Why do you use IKO?

The short answer is that we trust how IKO shingles are made, and we like that they come from a Canadian company that still stands behind its own product.

A Canadian company, still family-run

IKO was founded in Calgary, Alberta, in 1951 by Isidore Koschitzky, and it made its first shingles there in 1954. More than 70 years later it is still owned and run by the Koschitzky family, with manufacturing across Canada, including its granule quarry in Madoc, Ontario, and its plant in Hawkesbury, Ontario. When we put our name on a roof, it matters to us that the people who made the shingles are accountable for them too.

Made almost entirely in-house

Rather than relying on outside suppliers, IKO makes most of its own materials. It processes its own asphalt on site, something it began in 1960 as one of the first shingle makers to do so. It quarries and crushes its own stone, colours its own roofing granules, and makes its own backsurfacing and shingle wrappers. The fibreglass mat at the core of each shingle comes from glass fibre and mat plants that IKO built with its partners. Controlling nearly every step means fewer surprises from outside suppliers and more consistent shingles from one bundle to the next.

Built and tested for real weather

Every IKO plant works to the same strict quality controls, so a shingle made in one plant matches the same shingle made in another. Its Performance shingles, Dynasty and Nordic, are backed by a limited wind warranty for winds up to 210 km/h (130 mph) and carry impact-resistance ratings, with Nordic rated Class 4, the highest available. They also include IKO's 15-year Iron Clad Protection period, which covers manufacturer defects without proration for the first 15 years.

For us, that adds up to a product we are comfortable installing on our customers' homes. Compare every line and colour below, and ask us which one suits your home. We will explain the differences in plain language.

Dynasty®

Asphalt shingles (Performance)

Dynasty is IKO's high-performance laminated shingle and the line IKO itself calls its favourite. It pairs strength with curb appeal, offering 14 enhanced colour blends that suit rustic, urban, traditional and modern homes alike.

What sets it apart is IKO's ArmourZone, a wider, tear-resistant woven nailing strip built into every shingle. It gives the nails a stronger hold and helps keep shingles from tearing loose or pulling over the nail heads in high winds. Dynasty is rated ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H for wind, carries a limited wind warranty for winds up to 210 km/h (130 mph), and has a Class 3 impact rating (FM 4473 / UL 2218). For Canadian homes, it meets the CSA A123.5 product standard and holds a CAN/ULC S107 Class A fire rating.

Dynasty comes with a limited lifetime warranty, IKO's 15-year Iron Clad Protection period and a 10-year limited warranty against blue-green algae streaking. Its impact rating may help you qualify for an insurance discount where insurers offer one, although hail damage itself is not covered by the warranty. Each shingle measures 1,038 by 349 mm with a 149 mm exposure, and a bundle covers 3.1 square metres (33 1/3 sq. ft.).

StormShield®

Accessories (Ice and water protection)

StormShield is a self-adhering ice and water protector that goes on the roof deck, under the shingles, in the places most likely to leak. It is a modified bitumen membrane on a non-woven glass fibre mat that acts as a second barrier against wind-driven rain and ice dams, and it can also serve as flashing around dormers, vent stacks, skylights, doors and windows.

It meets ASTM D1970. Each roll covers 18.1 square metres (195 sq. ft.).

GoldShield™

Accessories (Ice and water protection)

GoldShield is IKO's premium ice and water protector and its highest level of protection against ice and water getting under the shingles. It goes where ice dams form and around vent stacks, dormers and other vulnerable spots. The flexible self-adhesive membrane seals tightly to the deck, and its silicone-treated release sheet allows a clean, accurate installation.

It is evaluated by the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC 12413-R) and meets CSA A123.22 and ASTM D1970. Each roll covers 18.6 square metres (200 sq. ft.).

GoldSeam®

Accessories (Deck sealing tape)

GoldSeam is a self-sealing tape for the joints and other vulnerable spots on the roof deck, helping prevent the leaks that lead to ice damming, water damage and rot. It is very flexible, so it goes on quickly, and its slip-resistant surface gives safer footing on steep roofs.

It meets CSA A123.22 and ASTM D1970. Each roll is 20.3 m long and 108 mm wide (66.7 ft by 4 1/4 in).

Stormtite®

Accessories (Synthetic underlayment)

Stormtite is a synthetic underlayment that covers the roof deck beneath the shingles. It is stronger than traditional roofing felt, resists slipping, tearing and shredding under foot traffic, and is coated on both sides with polyolefin to shed water. It lies flat around vents, dormers and skylights without curling, and built-in UV stabilizers let it stay exposed for up to 30 days if weather delays the shingles.

It meets ASTM D8257. Each roll covers 92.9 square metres (1,000 sq. ft.).

EdgeSeal®

Accessories (Starters)

EdgeSeal is a self-adhering roll starter that bonds the drip edge, the ice and water protector and the first course of shingles into one continuous barrier along the eaves and rakes, where wind uplift and blow-offs usually begin. It needs no special tools or nail gun: it is cut to length, the release film is peeled away, and it is pressed into place.

It meets ASTM D1970. Each roll is 20.5 m long and 200 mm wide (67.3 ft by 7 7/8 in).

Leading Edge Plus™

Accessories (Starters)

Leading Edge Plus is a starter shingle for the eaves and rakes that creates a tight seal around the roof's perimeter, where wind does the most damage. Each shingle splits into two starter strips, so regular shingles do not have to be cut down to make starters.

It is rated ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H for wind when installed over an approved underlayment, and it holds a CAN/ULC S107 Class A fire rating. Each bundle covers 33 linear metres (109 linear ft).

Hip & Ridge™ 12 and Hip & Ridge™ Class 4

Accessories (Hip and ridge caps)

Hip & Ridge cap shingles finish the hips and ridges, the peaks where a roof is most exposed. Each piece separates into three caps, giving a neater, more uniform look than caps cut from regular shingles. Hip & Ridge 12 carries a Class 3 impact rating to pair with Class 3 shingles such as Dynasty and Cambridge, and Hip & Ridge Class 4 pairs with Class 4 shingles such as Nordic.

IKO cap shingles, or an equivalent IKO-approved product, are required for IKO's shingle warranty coverage. They are rated ASTM D3161 Class F for wind and meet CSA A123.5. Each package covers 9 linear metres (29.5 linear ft).

UltraHP® and UltraHP® IR

Accessories (Hip and ridge caps)

UltraHP and UltraHP IR are high-profile ridge cap shingles that give the roof line a thicker, more dimensional finish than standard caps, in colours that coordinate with IKO's most popular laminated shingles. UltraHP suits IKO laminated shingles, and UltraHP IR is the version used with impact-resistant shingles.

IKO cap shingles, or an equivalent IKO-approved product, are required for IKO's shingle warranty coverage. Each piece measures 292 by 254 mm (11 1/2 by 10 in).
